Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do electricity tariffs vary so much between states?

Electricity is a concurrent subject under the Constitution of India. State regulatory commissions (SERCs) set tariffs independently based on production costs, hydel resources, coal availability, and state subsidy budgets.

How is the fixed demand charge calculated?

For residential connections, the fixed capacity charge is based on your sanctioned load (in kW). It is calculated by multiplying your load by the DISCOM's monthly rate per kW (ranging from Rs. 20 to Rs. 145 depending on the state). It remains constant regardless of whether you consume any electricity.

What is a telescopic slab rate, and how does it affect my bill?

A telescopic slab structure means your consumption is divided into blocks (e.g., 0–100 units, 101–200 units), with each block billed at a different per-unit tariff. Consuming even 1 unit above a slab threshold can push you into a higher rate band, causing your bill to increase.

Are there any hidden taxes or duties on my electricity bill?

Yes, state governments levy an electricity duty (tax) ranging from 5% to 16% on your total energy and fixed charges. Additionally, municipal taxes, green energy cesses, and variable surcharges like FPPCA are added to the final amount.

What is FPPCA on my bill, and why does it change?

Fuel Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) is a variable surcharge representing fluctuations in fuel (coal/gas) prices and power purchase costs. It is updated quarterly or monthly by state regulators and typically ranges from 10 paise to 80 paise per unit.

How does installing a rooftop solar panel reduce my DISCOM bill?

Rooftop solar exports power back to the grid under net-metering. Your monthly units are offset by the solar export units. If your 3 kW solar system exports 300 units and you consume 300 units, your net consumption is 0 units, leaving you with only basic fixed charges.

What is the difference between single phase and three phase supply?

Single phase supply is standard for loads up to 5 kW (small homes), while three phase supply is required for larger loads (above 5 kW) to balance heavy appliances like ACs and water pumps. Fixed capacity charges are significantly higher for three phase connections.

What Does This Calculator Do?

This page compares residential electricity tariff rates across different states and DISCOMs in India, helping you analyze regional power costs.

How to Use It

  1. Select State A: Pick your primary comparison state.
  2. Select State B: Pick your secondary comparison state.
  3. Compare: View side-by-side slabs, fixed costs, and taxes.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: Electricity tariffs are state subjects in India, leading to vast pricing differences. Some states offer subsidies, while others charge high duties.
  • The Formula:
  • We model the slab structures and calculate the effective per-unit rate = Total Bill / Units Consumed.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

  • Consuming 200 units costs ~₹22 in Delhi due to subsidies, ~₹770 in Gujarat, and ~₹1,108 in Maharashtra.
