Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and who is eligible?

The Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) is a retirement pension scheme managed by the EPFO. To be eligible for a monthly pension, you must be a member of the EPF, complete a minimum of 10 years of pensionable service, and reach the pensionable age (reduced pension at 50, full pension at 58).

How do the 2 bonus years of service work?

Under EPFO rules, if you complete 20 or more years of pensionable service, you are rewarded with 2 bonus years added to your actual service years when calculating your pension. However, the total pensionable service years are strictly capped at a maximum of 35 years.

What is the pensionable salary cap under EPS?

Historically, the EPFO capped the pensionable salary at ₹6,500/month, which was raised to ₹15,000/month from September 1, 2014. Under the Supreme Court ruling, eligible employees who opted for higher pension contributions can calculate their pension on their actual higher basic salary instead of the statutory cap.

How does early pension claim affect my monthly payouts?

You can choose to draw an early pension starting from age 50, provided you have completed 10 years of service. However, early pensions are subject to a reduction penalty of 4% for every year you claim before the full retirement age of 58. For example, claiming at age 50 leads to a permanent 32% reduction.

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator estimates the monthly pension you will receive from the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) under the Indian EPFO. It applies the statutory formula using your pensionable service years, basic salary, and pensionable salary cap.

How to Use It

  1. Years of Service: Enter the number of years you have contributed to the EPF/EPS (minimum 10 years to qualify for pension).
  2. Last Drawn Basic Salary (₹): Enter your actual basic salary + dearness allowance (DA).
  3. Pensionable Salary (₹): Choose whether to use the statutory cap (currently ₹15,000) or actual basic salary if eligible for higher pension.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: Out of your employer's monthly EPF contribution (12% of basic), 8.33% goes to the EPS pension scheme. When you retire (usually at age 58), you get a lifetime monthly pension. If you complete more than 20 years of service, the government adds 2 bonus years to your tenure as a reward.
  • The Formula:
  • Monthly EPS Pension = (Pensionable Salary × Pensionable Service Years) / 70
  • Service years are capped at 35. If service exceeds 20 years, 2 bonus years are added.
  • The default pensionable salary is capped at ₹15,000 per month by EPFO guidelines.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

Assume you retire after 25 years of service, and your last drawn basic salary was ₹50,000. Your pension is computed using the standard capped salary of ₹15,000:

  • Service tenure = 25 years (since 25 > 20, we add 2 bonus years = 27 years)
  • Pensionable Salary = ₹15,000 (standard EPFO cap)
  • Monthly EPS Pension = (₹15,000 × 27) / 70 = ₹5,786 per month
  • Annual EPS Pension = ₹5,786 × 12 = ₹69,429
  • If you opt for early pension at age 50, the amount is reduced by 4% for every year below 58.
