About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator estimates your monthly pension and eligibility under the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS 95) for FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. It allows you to model both standard and higher pension options, enabling you to see how different salary caps and service lengths affect your retirement income.

How to Use It

  1. EPFO Membership: Confirm if you are an active EPFO member with at least 10 years of service (which is required for pension eligibility).
  2. Service Details: Enter your total pensionable service in years and your current age.
  3. Monthly Salary: Enter your average monthly salary over the last 60 months (subject to the statutory cap or actual salary for the higher pension option).
  4. Pension Type: Select your pension type (Superannuation, Early Pension, reduced pensions, or family pensions like Widow/Orphan).
  5. Higher Option: Choose whether you joined EPS before Sept 2014 and if you opted for the higher pension.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Core Formula: Your pension is calculated as:

$$\text{Monthly Pension} = \frac{\text{Pensionable Salary} \times \text{Pensionable Service}}{70}$$

  • Pensionable Salary: Standard calculations cap this salary at ₹15,000 per month. Under the higher pension option (following the Supreme Court's 2022 ruling), actual salaries are used without the ₹15,000 cap.
  • Service Weightage: A bonus of +2 years is added to your pensionable service if you have completed 20 years or more of service and retire at age 58.
  • Early Retirement: Early pension (age 50 to 57) is reduced by 4% for every year under age 58. Under age 50, a member is not eligible unless disabled.
  • Family Pensions: Widow pension is 50% of the member's pension (min ₹450). Children receive 25% of the widow's pension each (max 2 children, min ₹250). Orphans receive 75% of the widow's pension each (max 2 orphans, min ₹750).

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

Consider a member who completes 25 years of service and retires at 58:

  • Pensionable Salary: Average last 60 months gross salary is ₹30,000.
  • Standard Option: Cap is ₹15,000. Service gets +2 years bonus (total 27 years).

$$\text{Standard Pension} = \frac{15,000 \times 27}{70} = ₹5,786\text{/month}$$

  • Higher Option: Actual salary of ₹30,000 is used instead of ₹15,000.

$$\text{Higher Pension} = \frac{30,000 \times 27}{70} = ₹11,571\text{/month}$$

  • Monthly Gain: By opting for the higher pension, the member receives ₹5,785 more per month, though a portion of their past EPF corpus is diverted to the pension scheme.
