Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the ESIC eligibility criteria for 2026?

For mandatory ESIC coverage in 2026, an employee's monthly gross wage must not exceed ₹21,000. For employees with disabilities, the wage ceiling is ₹25,000 per month. Additionally, the employer must be registered under ESIC (applies to factories or establishments with 10 or more workers).

How to apply online for ESIC benefits?

Insured Persons (IPs) can log in to the official ESIC portal (esic.gov.in) using their ESI insurance number and password. Cash benefit claims (like sickness or maternity) can be raised online, but medical benefits are accessed directly at ESIC dispensaries/hospitals using the e-Pehchan card.

What is the ESIC benefit amount per month in 2026?

Benefit amounts depend on the benefit type. Sickness benefit is paid at 70% of average daily wages for up to 91 days/year. Maternity benefit is 100% of daily wages for 26 weeks. Temporary disablement benefit is 90% of daily wages, and permanent disablement is paid based on the disability percentage (up to 90% lifelong).

What documents are required to claim ESIC benefits?

The required documents vary: 1. e-Pehchan Card (ESI card). 2. Form 9 (for Sickness/Temporary Disablement claim). 3. Form 19 (Maternity benefit claim) with pregnancy/confinement certificate. 4. Medical certificate from an ESIC doctor/dispensary. 5. Bank passbook copy for DBT. How to Use It

  1. ESIC Enrollment: Select if you are currently registered as an insured person under ESIC.
  2. Monthly Wages: Input your gross monthly wage (maximum statutory limit is ₹21,000 for general employees and ₹25,000 for employees with disabilities).
  3. Benefit Type: Select the specific benefit tab (Sickness, Maternity, Disablement, Dependants, or Medical).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • Contribution Split: The employee pays 0.75% and the employer pays 3.25% of the gross wages monthly. Employees with average daily wages up to ₹176 are exempt from paying their share.
  • Sickness Benefit: 70% of daily wages for a maximum of 91 days in a year.
  • Maternity Benefit: 100% of daily wages for 26 weeks (182 days) for confinement/birth, 6 weeks for miscarriage, and 12 weeks for adoption.
  • Disablement Benefit: 90% of daily wages for temporary disability. For permanent disability, the benefit is scaled by the disability percentage.
  • Dependants Benefit: 90% of daily wages shared among dependants in the event of the insured person's death.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

Consider an employee earning ₹18,000 per month who requires Sickness Benefit for 15 days:

  • Eligible: Yes, wages (₹18,000) are under the ₹21,000 ceiling.
  • Monthly Contributions: Employee share: ₹135 (0.75%), Employer share: ₹585 (3.25%).
  • Sickness Benefit Rate: Daily wage rate is ₹18,000 / 30 = ₹600. Sickness benefit daily rate = 70% of ₹600 = ₹420.
  • Total Payoff: For 15 days of sickness, the cash benefit paid is ₹420 × 15 = ₹6,300.
