PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) Benefits Explained

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is India's national mission for financial inclusion, ensuring access to financial services like basic savings accounts, remittance, credit, insurance, and pensions at affordable rates.

Core Account Benefits

  • Interest on deposit: Accounts earn interest on savings balances depending on the partner commercial bank.
  • Zero Balance Capability: There is no requirement to maintain a minimum account balance.
  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): Government subsidies (LPG, pension, PM-KISAN) are transferred directly into PMJDY accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the RuPay Card Accidental Insurance Cover amount?

For PMJDY accounts opened after August 28, 2018, the RuPay Debit Card provides an accidental insurance cover of ₹2 Lakh. For accounts opened before that date, the cover is ₹1 Lakh. To claim this, the card must have been used for at least one transaction in the 90 days prior to the accident.

How do I qualify for the ₹10,000 overdraft (OD) facility?

To get the overdraft facility, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, and your Jan Dhan account must have been operated satisfactorily for at least 6 months. Only one member per household (preferably the female head) is eligible. There are no conditions for overdrafts up to ₹2,000.

Can I open a Jan Dhan account if I already have a regular bank account?

No. PMJDY is designed for financially excluded individuals. If you already have a basic savings bank account, you cannot open a fresh PMJDY account. However, you can request your bank to transfer your existing savings account to a PMJDY account if you wish to avail of its specific benefits.

What are PMJJBY and PMSBY social security schemes?

These are low-cost insurance plans linked to bank accounts. PMJJBY provides a ₹2 Lakh life cover for ₹436/year premium (ages 18-50). PMSBY provides a ₹2 Lakh accidental death/disability cover for ₹20/year premium (ages 18-70). This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: PM Jan Dhan Yojana is India's national mission for financial inclusion. A basic savings account under PMJDY offers zero-balance capability, regular savings interest, and a RuPay card with built-in ₹2 Lakh accidental insurance. If the account is operated satisfactorily for 6 months, holders qualify for a hassle-free overdraft (loan) of up to ₹10,000.
  • The Formula:
  • RuPay Insurance: ₹2,00,000 (if card is used at least once in the last 90 days).
  • Overdraft limit: up to ₹10,000 (if age is 18-65 and account is 6+ months old; no conditions for first ₹2,000).

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

A 30-year-old account holder in Uttar Pradesh has a Jan Dhan account open for 8 months. He has maintained a small balance of ₹5,000 and uses his RuPay card regularly.

  • Accidental Insurance Cover: ₹2,00,000 (Active RuPay card, account opened post-2018).
  • Overdraft Limit: Qualified for up to ₹10,000 overdraft line based on 8 months of clean history.
  • Savings Interest: Earns standard bank interest (~3.00% p.a. on the ₹5,000 balance).
