Understanding Karnataka Road Tax (RTO Slabs) 2026
When purchasing a new car or two-wheeler in Karnataka, you pay a lifetime road tax to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). This tax is calculated as a percentage of the vehicle's ex-showroom price (the factory cost plus GST). Karnataka's road tax rates are among the highest in the country, especially for premium vehicles.
Key Parameters Determining the RTO Tax in Karnataka:
- Vehicle Type: Motorcycles and scooters are taxed at a flat 12% rate for individuals. Private passenger cars and SUVs follow progressive slabs starting from 13% up to 18% depending on the price bracket.
- Electric Vehicles (EV) Tax: In a major policy shift, Karnataka ended the 100% road tax waiver for electric vehicles (EVs) in April 2026. All new electric cars and two-wheelers now attract a flat 10% EV road tax.
- Infrastructure & Safety Cesses: Karnataka levies an additional 11% Infrastructure Cess and a 1% Road Safety Cess on the base road tax amount itself, which funds public transit and road safety programs in the state.
- Registration Class: The base tax rate doubles if the vehicle is registered under a corporate body or company name (corporate purchase) instead of an individual's name.
Statutory Additional Fees:
Flat charges include a registration fee (₹600 for cars, ₹300 for bikes) and High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) plate and smart card processing fees (modeled at a standard flat ₹500).
