Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the 100-day guarantee under MNREGA?

Every rural household registered under MNREGA (now VBRAM-G) is legally entitled to at least 100 days of unskilled manual work per financial year. After 100 days are exhausted, the household may not demand further work under this guarantee, though states can provide additional days from their own budgets.

What happens if the government does not provide work within 15 days of demand?

Under Section 7(1) of the MNREGA, if work is not provided within 15 days of a written demand, the state government must pay an unemployment allowance. The rate is at least 1/4th of the notified daily wage for the first 30 days of unemployment, and at least 1/2 of the daily wage thereafter.

How are MNREGA wages paid and when?

Wages must be paid within 15 days of completing the work, directly into the worker's bank or post office account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Delayed payments beyond 15 days attract a compensation of 0.05% of the unpaid wages per day of delay (under Section 3(3)).

Do SC/ST workers get any priority under MNREGA?

Yes. At least 33% of all MNREGA beneficiaries must be women. SC and ST households are given priority during work allocation, and at least half of all MNREGA projects in a Gram Panchayat must be for SC/ST-dominated hamlets. SC/ST workers cannot be discriminated against in work allocation or wage payment.

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This MNREGA Wage Entitlement Calculator computes your daily wage and projected earnings under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. It incorporates the latest state-wise wage rates revised for FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27, and calculates statutory unemployment allowances if work is not provided within 15 days of demand.

How to Use It

  1. Select State: Choose your state to load the official daily wage rate (ranging from ₹243 to ₹400/day).
  2. Days Worked: Enter the number of days you worked this month (or plan to work, up to the 100-day annual cap).
  3. Work Demand Date: Specify if you demanded work and whether it was delayed beyond 15 days.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: MNREGA guarantees 100 days of unskilled manual work per rural household per year. Wages are paid based on daily rates revised annually by the Central Government. Under Section 7(1) of the Act, if work is not provided within 15 days of demanding it, the state must pay an unemployment allowance (1/4 of the wage rate for the first 30 days, and 1/2 of the wage rate thereafter).
  • The Formula:
  • Regular Wages = Days Worked × State Daily Wage Rate
  • Unemployment Allowance (for days late after 15 days of demand) = Days Late × (Wage Rate × Allowance Fraction)
  • Max Annual Entitlement = 100 days × State Daily Wage Rate

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

For example, a job cardholder in Haryana (wage rate = ₹400/day) works for 25 days in a month. In another instance, they demanded work but were kept waiting for 20 days.

  • Scenario A (Earnings): 25 days × ₹400 = ₹10,000 monthly earnings.
  • Scenario B (Unemployment Allowance): Work was delayed by 5 days past the 15-day limit.
  • Allowance = 5 days × (₹400 × 0.25) = ₹500 compensation.
