Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is National Savings Certificate (NSC)?

NSC is a fixed-income, low-risk post office savings scheme backed by the Government of India. It has a lock-in period of 5 years and offers fixed interest rates determined quarterly by the government. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

How does the Section 80C tax benefit work for NSC interest?

The initial investment in NSC qualifies for deduction under Section 80C. Additionally, the interest earned in years 1 to 4 is automatically reinvested back into the scheme. Since this interest is reinvested, it also qualifies for a fresh Section 80C deduction in those respective years. The interest earned in the 5th (final) year is taxable as it is paid out on maturity.

Is there a maximum limit for NSC investments?

There is no upper limit or cap on the amount you can invest in NSC. You can purchase certificates of various denominations starting from ₹1,000. However, the tax deduction under Section 80C remains capped at the standard ₹1,50,000 per financial year.

Can I withdraw my NSC investment before 5 years?

Premature withdrawal of NSC is generally not allowed. It is permitted only under exceptional circumstances, such as the death of the certificate holder, forfeiture by a pledgee (if pledged as collateral for a loan), or under order of a court of law.

Where can I verify the source data for this calculator?

This calculator estimates the maturity value and annual interest accruals for the National Savings Certificate (NSC) scheme. It calculates the compound interest and highlights the Section 80C tax benefits of reinvested interest.

engine_type: compiled | format: inr

How to Use It

  1. Investment Amount (₹): Enter the lump-sum principal you want to invest in NSC.
  2. NSC Type: Select the NSC issue type (defaults to NSC VIII Issue (5 Years)).
  3. Interest Rate (%): Displays the current government rate (defaults to 7.7% per annum).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: NSC is a safe government-backed savings bond with a 5-year lock-in. Interest is compounded annually but paid only at maturity. Because the interest accrued in years 1 to 4 is reinvested into the scheme, it qualifies as a fresh 80C deduction in those years.
  • The Formula:
  • Maturity Value = Principal × (1 + Rate / 100)^5
  • Accumulated Value (Year t) = Principal × (1 + Rate / 100)^t
  • Interest in Year t = Accumulated Value (Year t) - Accumulated Value (Year t-1)

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

For example, you invest ₹1,00,000 in NSC at a 7.7% interest rate for 5 years.

  • Maturity Value = ₹1,00,000 × (1.077)^5 = ₹1,44,903
  • Total Interest Earned = ₹44,903
  • Year-by-Year Interest Breakdown:
  • Year 1: ₹7,700 (tax-deductible under 80C)
  • Year 2: ₹8,293 (tax-deductible under 80C)
  • Year 3: ₹8,931 (tax-deductible under 80C)
  • Year 4: ₹9,619 (tax-deductible under 80C)
  • Year 5: ₹10,360 (taxable, paid out on maturity)
