Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a loan processing fee?

A loan processing fee is a one-time administrative charge levied by banks, NBFCs, and HFCs to cover the expenses of verifying your application, checking credit scores, valuing property/collateral, and legal documentation. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

Why is there GST on processing fees and how much is it?

Under Indian tax regulations, loan processing fees are classified as a banking/financial service. Therefore, they attract a mandatory Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate of 18%. This tax is paid directly to the government. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

Is the loan processing fee refundable?

Generally, loan processing fees are non-refundable. Even if your loan application is rejected by the bank or you choose not to avail of the loan after sanction, the lender typically keeps the fee to cover administrative costs. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

Can the loan processing fee be negotiated or waived?

Yes. Lenders often waive processing fees during festive seasons or under special marketing campaigns. If you have an excellent credit profile (CIBIL score > 750) or are a pre-approved customer, you can negotiate a discount or complete waiver. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

How to Use It

  1. Loan Amount (₹): Enter the total amount you wish to borrow.
  2. Lender Type: Select the lender category (Bank, NBFC, HFC).
  3. Loan Type: Select the type of loan (Home, Personal, Car, Business).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: When you apply for a loan, financial institutions charge a processing fee to cover administrative expenses. Under Indian tax rules, this processing fee attracts an 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST). Lenders typically deduct these upfront charges directly from your sanctioned loan before disbursal.
  • The Formula:

Fee Percentage = determined by lender type and loan type

Processing Fee = Loan Amount × Fee Percentage

GST on Fee = Processing Fee × 18 / 100

Total Upfront Cost = Processing Fee + GST on Fee

Effective Loan Received = Loan Amount - Total Upfront Cost

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

Suppose you apply for a home loan of ₹20,00,000 from a commercial Bank.

  • Processing fee rate for Bank Home Loan = 0.50%
  • Processing Fee = ₹20,00,000 × 0.50% = ₹10,000
  • GST on Fee = ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800
  • Total Upfront Cost = ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800
  • Net Disbursed Loan = ₹20,00,000 - ₹11,800 = ₹19,88,200
