Initially launched as COVID relief, the Government of India extended the PMGKAY scheme for five years starting January 1, 2024 (valid until December 2028). Under this scheme, all foodgrain entitlements for AAY and PHH cardholders under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) are distributed completely free of cost (₹0).

Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cards are issued to the poorest of the poor households, qualifying them for a flat 35 kg of foodgrains per month, regardless of family size. Priority Household (PHH) cards are issued to other low-income households, qualifying them for 5 kg of foodgrains per person per month.

BPL (Below Poverty Line) cardholders are generally mapped to the PHH category in most states and receive the same free grain benefits. APL (Above Poverty Line) cardholders are generally not covered under the central NFSA free foodgrains allocation, though some states offer separate state-subsidized rates.

Yes. The government has mandated the linking of Aadhaar numbers for all members listed on a ration card (under the One Nation One Ration Card scheme). This prevents duplicate cards and enables biometric verification via e-POS machines at Fair Price Shops.
