Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between CTC and take-home salary?

CTC (Cost to Company) is the total amount an employer spends on an employee per year. It includes direct components like basic salary and allowances, and indirect components like employer contributions to EPF and Gratuity. Take-home salary is the net cash salary you receive after deducting taxes, professional tax, and employee EPF contributions.

Why is Basic salary usually kept at 40% or 50% of CTC?

Basic salary forms the foundation of your pay structure. Keeping it at 40% to 50% of CTC ensures a balanced payroll that complies with code rules (like the Code on Wages requiring basic pay to be at least 50% of total salary). It also balances retirement contributions like EPF and Gratuity, which are directly calculated as a percentage of Basic.

How is the HRA component in the salary breakup calculated?

HRA (House Rent Allowance) is typically configured as a percentage of your Basic salary. It is commonly set at 50% of Basic salary for employees living in metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) and 40% of Basic salary for employees in non-metro cities.

Is EPF employer contribution part of my CTC?

Yes. The employer's contribution to the Employee Provident Fund (12% of basic salary) is an expense incurred by the employer on your behalf. Therefore, it is included in your CTC, along with your own 12% deduction which is taken from your gross pay.

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator breaks down your Cost to Company (CTC) into its core salary components such as Basic Salary, House Rent Allowance (HRA), Special Allowance, Provident Fund (EPF), Professional Tax, and Gratuity. It estimates your gross monthly pay and the final in-hand (take-home) salary you receive.

How to Use It

  1. CTC (₹/year): Enter your annual Cost to Company (gross annual package).
  2. Basic % of CTC: Enter the percentage of CTC allocated to Basic salary (typically 40% to 50%).
  3. HRA % of Basic: Enter the HRA percentage (usually 50% for metro cities, 40% for non-metro).
  4. EPF: Select whether Employee Provident Fund contribution is deducted.
  5. Professional Tax: Select whether Professional Tax is applicable (usually ₹200/month).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: CTC represents the total expense an employer incurs on you. It includes direct payouts (Basic, HRA, Special Allowance) and indirect benefits (Provident Fund contributions, Gratuity). Your take-home salary is what remains after deducting employee contributions and statutory taxes from your gross pay.
  • The Formula:
  • Basic Salary = CTC × Basic% / 100
  • HRA = Basic × HRA% / 100
  • EPF Employee/Employer = 12% of Basic (capped at ₹1,800/month or ₹21,600/year under statutory rules)
  • Gratuity (Employer Contribution) = Basic × 4.81% (accrued for tenure)
  • Special Allowance = CTC - Basic - HRA - EPF Employer - Gratuity (reconciling balance)
  • Take Home Annual = CTC - EPF Employee - EPF Employer - Gratuity - Professional Tax

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

For example, you have a CTC of ₹12,00,000 per annum with a 40% Basic and 50% HRA:

  • Basic Salary = ₹12,00,000 × 40% = ₹4,80,000
  • HRA = ₹4,80,000 × 50% = ₹2,40,000
  • Employer EPF Contribution = 12% of ₹4,80,000 = ₹57,600 (capped at ₹21,600/year)
  • Gratuity = ₹4,80,000 × 4.81% = ₹23,088
  • Special Allowance = ₹12,00,000 - ₹4,80,000 - ₹2,40,000 - ₹21,600 (EPF) - ₹23,088 (Gratuity) = ₹4,35,312
  • Gross Salary (Annual) = Basic + HRA + Special Allowance = ₹11,55,312
  • Deductions: Employee EPF = ₹21,600, Professional Tax = ₹2,400
  • Net Annual Take-Home = Gross Salary - EPF - PT = ₹11,31,312
  • Monthly Take-Home = ₹11,31,312 / 12 = ₹94,276
