Understanding Tamil Nadu Road Tax (RTO Slabs) 2026
When purchasing a new vehicle in Tamil Nadu, you must register the vehicle with the local RTO and pay the lifetime road tax. The road tax rate is calculated on the vehicle's ex-showroom price (the factory cost plus GST).
Key Parameters Determining the RTO Tax in Tamil Nadu:
- Vehicle Type: Two-wheelers are taxed at a flat 8% of the ex-showroom value. Cars and SUVs follow a two-tier tax bracket.
- Private Passenger Cars Slabs: Cars costing under ₹10 Lakh are charged 10% road tax. Cars costing ₹10 Lakh and above are charged 15% road tax.
- Electric Vehicles (EV) Tax: Electric vehicles (EVs) are 100% exempted from road tax in Tamil Nadu, encouraging the adoption of green transportation.
- Registration Class: The base tax rate doubles if the vehicle is registered under a company name (corporate purchase) instead of an individual's name (20% for vehicles under ₹10 Lakh, and 30% for ₹10 Lakh and above).
Statutory Additional Fees:
Flat charges include a registration fee (₹600 for cars, ₹300 for bikes) and High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) plate and smart card processing fees (modeled at a standard flat ₹500). A Road Safety Cess of 1% is calculated on the base road tax.
