Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the new tax regime slab structure for FY 2026-27?

Under the New Tax Regime, the slabs are: Up to ₹4L: 0%, ₹4L-₹8L: 5%, ₹8L-₹12L: 10%, ₹12L-₹16L: 15%, ₹16L-₹20L: 20%, ₹20L-₹24L: 25%, and Above ₹24L: 30%. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

How does the Section 87A rebate work in the New Tax Regime?

In the New Tax Regime, if your taxable income (after standard deduction) is up to ₹12 Lakhs, you receive a full tax rebate under Section 87A, making your net tax payable ₹0. If your taxable income slightly exceeds ₹12 Lakhs, marginal relief applies to cap your tax liability at the excess income over ₹12 Lakhs.

What is the standard deduction and who gets it?

Standard deduction is a flat deduction subtracted from your gross salary income before tax calculations. In the New Regime (FY 2026-27), it is ₹75,000 for salaried employees and pensioners. Under the Old Regime, it is capped at ₹50,000. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

What is the difference between Effective and Marginal tax rates?

Your marginal tax rate is the tax rate applied to the last rupee of your income (your highest slab, e.g., 30%). Your effective tax rate is the actual percentage of your total income paid as tax (Total Tax divided by Gross Income), which is always much lower than your marginal rate.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: India uses a progressive tax slab system. This means your entire income is not taxed at a single rate; instead, different parts (slabs) of your income are taxed at progressively higher rates. This tool breaks down your income into individual slabs to show exactly where every rupee of tax comes from.
  • The Formula:
  • Slabs under New Regime 2026-27:
  • Up to ₹4 Lakhs: 0%
  • ₹4L to ₹8 Lakhs: 5%
  • ₹8L to ₹12 Lakhs: 10%
  • ₹12L to ₹16 Lakhs: 15%
  • ₹16L to ₹20 Lakhs: 20%
  • ₹20L to ₹24 Lakhs: 25%
  • Above ₹24 Lakhs: 30%
  • Standard deduction of ₹75,000 is subtracted from gross income for salaried individuals.
  • Health & Education Cess of 4% is added to the computed tax.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

For example, you are a salaried employee earning ₹12,00,000 annually and choose the New Tax Regime (2026-27):

  • Standard Deduction = ₹75,000
  • Taxable Income = ₹12,00,000 - ₹75,000 = ₹11,25,000
  • Tax Breakdown by Slab:
  • Slab 1 (0 to 4L): 0% of ₹4,00,000 = ₹0
  • Slab 2 (4L to 8L): 5% of ₹4,00,000 = ₹20,000
  • Slab 3 (8L to 11.25L): 10% of ₹3,25,000 = ₹32,500
  • Total Base Tax = ₹20,000 + ₹32,500 = ₹52,500
  • Health & Education Cess (4%) = ₹52,500 × 4% = ₹2,100
  • Total Annual Tax = ₹52,500 + ₹2,100 = ₹54,600
  • Effective Tax Rate = (₹54,600 / ₹12,00,000) × 100 = 4.55%
