Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the typical interest rate for a two-wheeler loan in India?

Two-wheeler loan interest rates are generally higher than car loans, typically ranging from 9% to 24% per annum. The rate depends heavily on the borrower's credit score, income, employment type, and the lender (banks vs. NBFCs). This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

Is a down payment mandatory for a two-wheeler loan?

Yes, most lenders require a down payment of 10% to 20% of the bike's on-road price. However, some banks offer 'zero down payment' or '100% funding' schemes for borrowers with excellent credit scores, though this increases the loan size and EMI.

What documents are required for a two-wheeler loan?

Generally, you need identity proof (PAN card, Aadhaar), address proof (utility bills, passport), income proof (last 3 months' salary slips, bank statement, or ITR for self-employed individuals), and passport-size photographs. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

Can I prepay my bike loan early, and are there charges?

Yes, you can prepay or foreclose your two-wheeler loan early. However, private banks and NBFCs usually levy foreclosure charges ranging from 3% to 6% of the outstanding principal amount, typically allowed only after 6 to 12 monthly EMIs have been paid.

Where can I verify the source data for this calculator?

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator estimates the monthly EMI, total interest, and total cost of purchasing a bike or scooter with a two-wheeler loan. It calculates these figures based on the bike's price, down payment, interest rate, and tenure.

engine_type: compiled | format: inr

How to Use It

  1. Bike Price (₹): Enter the on-road price of the bike or scooter.
  2. Down Payment (₹): Enter the initial cash payment you will pay upfront.
  3. Interest Rate (%): Enter the annual interest rate of the loan (max 24%).
  4. Tenure (Months): Enter the loan repayment period in months (max 48).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: The loan amount is the bike price minus your down payment. The bank charges interest on this loan amount. Your monthly payment (EMI) is calculated using the loan amount, interest rate, and tenure. The total cost of the bike is the down payment plus all EMI payments.
  • The Formula:
  • Loan Principal = Bike Price - Down Payment
  • EMI = [Principal × r × (1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1]

where r = Annual Rate / 12 / 100 and n = Tenure in Months.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

For example, you buy a bike for ₹1,20,000, make a down payment of ₹20,000, at an interest rate of 13% for 24 months.

  • Loan Principal = ₹1,20,000 - ₹20,000 = ₹1,00,000
  • Monthly EMI = [₹1,00,000 × 0.010833 × (1.010833)^24] / [(1.010833)^24 - 1] = ₹4,754
  • Total Interest Paid = (₹4,754 × 24) - ₹1,00,000 = ₹14,101
  • Total Cost of Bike = ₹20,000 + (₹4,754 × 24) = ₹1,34,101
