Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a wealth accumulation calculator and how does it help?

A wealth accumulation calculator projects the growth of your investments over time, combining an initial lump sum with recurring monthly contributions. It helps you see the future value of your portfolio and evaluate if your current savings rate is sufficient to meet your long-term goals.

How does an annual step-up affect my final wealth accumulated?

An annual step-up means you increase your monthly investment amount by a fixed percentage (e.g., 10%) each year, usually matching salary increases. This simple change compounds your wealth significantly faster than a flat SIP because you are putting larger amounts to work over time.

What expected return rate should I assume for a 15-20 year period?

For a long-term equity-oriented portfolio in India, a realistic expected return rate to assume is 12% to 15% per annum. For balanced portfolios, 10% to 12% is safer, and conservative debt-focused portfolios should be estimated at 6% to 8%. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

How does compounding frequency affect my wealth accumulation?

Compounding frequency determines how often the interest is calculated and added back to your principal. The more frequent the compounding (e.g. monthly vs. annually), the faster your money grows, although the difference becomes major primarily over long durations (15+ years).

Where can I verify the source data for this calculator?

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator projects the accumulation of your wealth over time through an initial savings amount and monthly investments that step up annually. It simulates compounding growth to show how regular step-ups accelerate reaching your financial targets.

How to Use It

  1. Current Savings (₹): Enter the lump sum amount you have already saved.
  2. Monthly Investment (₹): Enter the starting amount you will invest every month.
  3. Expected Return (%): Enter the annual compound rate of return.
  4. Years to Goal: Enter the investment period in years.
  5. Annual Step-Up (%): Enter the percentage by which you will increase your monthly investment every year.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: Regular saving is essential, but as your income grows, increasing your monthly savings accelerates your progress. A step-up SIP compounds your wealth significantly faster than a flat SIP because you deposit larger amounts in later years while still benefiting from compounding on earlier deposits.
  • The Formula:
  • Monthly return rate r = Expected Return / 12 / 100.
  • In Year 1, monthly contribution is M_1. Each month, Corpus = (Corpus + M_1) × (1 + r).
  • In Year 2, monthly contribution is M_2 = M_1 × (1 + stepUp / 100).
  • Repeat this annual calculation up to the total number of years.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

Suppose you start with ₹5,00,000 in savings and invest ₹15,000 monthly at 12% annual return for 20 years, stepping up the contribution by 10% each year:

  • Year 1: Monthly contribution is ₹15,000. Total invested this year is ₹1,80,000.
  • Year 2: Monthly contribution increases by 10% to ₹16,500. Total invested is ₹1,98,000.
  • Year 20: Monthly contribution has grown to ₹91,744.
  • Total Invested over 20 years = ₹1,05,75,000
  • Final Accumulated Corpus = ₹2,47,85,630
  • Wealth Gained from compounding = ₹1,42,10,630
