This calculator compares the running expenses and total ownership cost of an electric vehicle against a petrol or diesel car or scooter. It determines your monthly fuel savings, annual cash savings, breakeven distance in kilometers, and the payback period required to recover the higher EV purchase price.
- 1
Vehicle Type: Choose between four-wheeler car or two-wheeler scooter.
- 2
Monthly Driving: Enter your average monthly travel distance in kilometers.
- 3
On-Road Prices: Enter the on-road purchase price for both the EV and the petrol model.
- 4

- The Concept: Electric motors convert over 85% of electrical energy into motion, while internal combustion engines waste over 65% of fuel as heat. This makes the running cost per kilometer of an EV roughly one-seventh of a petrol vehicle. The upfront price premium of the EV gets recovered through daily fuel and maintenance savings.
- The Formula:
EV Cost per KM = (Battery Capacity in kWh / Real Range in KM) × Electricity Tariff per Unit
Petrol Cost per KM = Petrol Price per Liter / Fuel Mileage in KM per Liter
Monthly Savings = (Monthly KM × Petrol Cost per KM) - (Monthly KM × EV Cost per KM)
Payback Period in Years = (EV On-Road Price - Petrol On-Road Price) / (Annual Fuel Savings + Annual Service Savings)
Consider buying an electric car priced at ₹15,00,000 on-road versus a petrol car priced at ₹11,50,000 on-road, driving 1,200 km per month:
- 1
The upfront price premium is ₹15,00,000 - ₹11,50,000 = ₹3,50,000.
- 2
EV specs: 30 kWh battery, 250 km real range, electricity tariff ₹8 per unit.
EV running cost = (30 / 250) × 8 = ₹0.96 per km.
Monthly EV electricity bill = 1,200 × ₹0.96 = ₹1,152.
- 3
Petrol specs: ₹100 per liter, 15 km/liter mileage.
Petrol running cost = 100 / 15 = ₹6.67 per km.
Monthly petrol bill = 1,200 × ₹6.67 = ₹8,004.
- 4
Monthly fuel savings = ₹8,004 - ₹1,152 = ₹6,852 (Annual savings of ₹82,224).
- 5
Adding ₹10,000 in annual maintenance savings, total annual savings equals ₹92,224.
- 6
Payback period = ₹3,50,000 / ₹92,224 = 3.8 years (45,600 km breakeven point).
