📐 Triangle Trigonometry & Mathematical Formulation

In Euclidean geometry, a triangle is a three-sided polygon defined by three line segments and three internal angles that sum to exactly 180 degrees. Computing the measurements of a triangle—often referred to as "solving" the triangle—relies on trigonometric laws relating the side lengths and angle ratios.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What triangle properties can this calculator solve?

This calculator solves all side lengths, interior angles, perimeter, and area of any triangle. You need to provide at least three properties (such as three sides, or two sides and an angle) to compute the remaining details.

What are SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAS theorems?

These are triangle congruence theorems: Side-Side-Side (SSS), Side-Angle-Side (SAS), Angle-Side-Angle (ASA), and Angle-Angle-Side (AAS). By entering values matching one of these cases, the calculator uses trigonometry to solve the entire triangle.

How is the area of a non-right triangle calculated?

If all three sides are known, the area is calculated using Heron's Formula. If two sides and the included angle are known, the area is calculated using the sine area formula: Area = 0.5 * a * b * sin(C).

What are the Laws of Sines and Cosines?

The Law of Sines states that the ratio of the length of a side to the sine of its opposite angle is constant for all three sides. The Law of Cosines relates the sides and one angle (c² = a² + b² - 2ab * cos(C)), which is used to solve SAS and SSS triangles.

Can this calculator solve ambiguous SSA cases?

Yes. Side-Side-Angle (SSA) cases can result in zero, one, or two possible triangles depending on the input lengths. The calculator evaluates the mathematical conditions and informs you if an ambiguous or invalid case is entered.
