Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I compare electricity rates of different states?

Yes, select different states from the dropdown to see how their slab rates, fixed charges, and taxes impact the final monthly bill.

How is the fixed demand charge calculated?

For residential connections, the fixed capacity charge is based on your sanctioned load (in kW). It is calculated by multiplying your load by the DISCOM's monthly rate per kW (ranging from Rs. 20 to Rs. 145 depending on the state). It remains constant regardless of whether you consume any electricity.

What is a telescopic slab rate, and how does it affect my bill?

A telescopic slab structure means your consumption is divided into blocks (e.g., 0–100 units, 101–200 units), with each block billed at a different per-unit tariff. Consuming even 1 unit above a slab threshold can push you into a higher rate band, causing your bill to increase.

Are there any hidden taxes or duties on my electricity bill?

Yes, state governments levy an electricity duty (tax) ranging from 5% to 16% on your total energy and fixed charges. Additionally, municipal taxes, green energy cesses, and variable surcharges like FPPCA are added to the final amount.

What is FPPCA on my bill, and why does it change?

Fuel Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA) is a variable surcharge representing fluctuations in fuel (coal/gas) prices and power purchase costs. It is updated quarterly or monthly by state regulators and typically ranges from 10 paise to 80 paise per unit.

How does installing a rooftop solar panel reduce my DISCOM bill?

Rooftop solar exports power back to the grid under net-metering. Your monthly units are offset by the solar export units. If your 3 kW solar system exports 300 units and you consume 300 units, your net consumption is 0 units, leaving you with only basic fixed charges.

What is the difference between single phase and three phase supply?

Single phase supply is standard for loads up to 5 kW (small homes), while three phase supply is required for larger loads (above 5 kW) to balance heavy appliances like ACs and water pumps. Fixed capacity charges are significantly higher for three phase connections.

About This Calculator

Target Audience: General users looking for fast, accurate calculations

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator estimates your residential electricity bill across all major Indian states and electricity boards. By selecting your DISCOM and entering your units consumed, it calculates your slab-wise charges, fixed charges, and government duties. It helps you verify the accuracy of your utility bill and plan your energy consumption.

How to Use It

  1. State / DISCOM: Select your state electricity board or DISCOM from the dropdown menu (e.g., MSEDCL, TNEB, BESCOM, BSES).
  2. Units Consumed: Enter the total number of electricity units (kWh) consumed during the billing cycle.
  3. Billing Cycle: Select whether your bill is monthly or bi-monthly (TNEB is bi-monthly).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: Indian electricity boards bill consumers using progressive tariff blocks (slabs). Consuming more units pushes you into higher rate slabs, raising the cost per unit. Fixed charges and electricity duty are added to the slab totals.
  • The Formula:
  • Slab Charge = Sum of (Units in Slab × Slab Rate)
  • Gross Bill = Slab Charge + Monthly Fixed Charge + Regulatory Surcharges
  • Electricity Duty = Gross Bill × State Duty Percentage (e.g., 5% in Maharashtra, 6% in Karnataka)
  • Total Bill Amount = Gross Bill + Electricity Duty + FPPPA (Fuel Cost Adjustments)

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

Suppose you consume 250 units in a month on a board with these slabs: 0-100 units at ₹3.00, 101-300 units at ₹6.00, and fixed charge of ₹100.

  1. Slab Charges:
  • First 100 units = 100 × ₹3.00 = ₹300.
  • Next 150 units = 150 × ₹6.00 = ₹900.
  • Total Slab Cost = ₹300 + ₹900 = ₹1,200.
  1. Fixed Charges: ₹100.
  2. Electricity Duty (e.g., 5%):
  • Duty = (₹1,200 + ₹100) × 5% = ₹65.
  1. Total Bill: ₹1,200 + ₹100 + ₹65 = ₹1,365.
