🥑 Macronutrients & Metabolic Energy Balance
In nutrition and human metabolic modeling, managing your daily energy expenditure is the foundation of weight regulation. Macronutrients—Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats—supply the chemical energy (measured in dietary calories) required to sustain biological processes and physical performance.
Metabolic Rate Calculations
The macro core uses the clinically validated Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to compute Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):
- BMR (Men):
BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) - 5 × age (y) + 5 - BMR (Women):
BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) - 5 × age (y) - 161 - Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE): The calories demanded to maintain weight, adjusting for physical activity factors (from 1.2 for sedentary to 1.9 for athletes):
TDEE = BMR × Activity Factor
The Role of Each Macronutrient
A balanced macro split optimizes body composition adjustments during weight cuts or bulks:
- Protein: Essential for building and preserving skeletal muscle tissue. Protein possesses a high thermic effect of food (TEF), consuming roughly 20-30% of its own energy during digestion.
- Carbohydrates: The body's preferred source of glucose, storing muscle glycogen to sustain high-intensity exercise and cognitive processes.
- Fats: Essential for hormone production, cell membrane structures, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
