The Anatomy of a Sleep Cycle
A single human sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes on average (ranging between 70 to 110 minutes depending on individual genetics and age). During this interval, the brain transitions through four distinct stages:
- Stage N1 (Light Sleep): The transition phase between wakefulness and sleep. Muscles begin to relax, and brain waves slow. Lasts about 1–7 minutes.
- Stage N2 (Light Sleep): Heart rate slows and body temperature drops. The brain produces rapid, rhythmic brain wave activity known as sleep spindles. This stage constitutes the largest percentage of total night sleep.
- Stage N3 (Deep/Slow-Wave Sleep): The restorative stage necessary for physical recovery, cell repair, tissue growth, and immune system reinforcement. Waking up during this stage causes severe disorientation and cognitive fog.
- REM Sleep (Dreaming): Rapid Eye Movement sleep, characterized by increased brain activity, dreaming, and muscle paralysis. Crucial for memory consolidation, emotional processing, and neural development.
The Importance of Sleep Latency
When calculating the best time to set an alarm, many individuals make the mistake of omitting the time it takes to actually fall asleep. This duration is medically referred to as sleep latency.
For healthy adults, the standard latency lies between 10 to 20 minutes. A latency of under 5 minutes often indicates severe sleep deprivation, while a latency exceeding 30 minutes may point to insomnia or elevated stress levels. Our system utilizes a clinical baseline of 14 minutes to ensure the calculations match real-world outcomes.
Tips for Better Sleep Quality
- Keep a Consistent Schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the exact same time every day, even on weekends, to stabilize your circadian rhythm.
