🍞 The Physiology of Carbohydrate Metabolism
Carbohydrates are processed into glucose, which is stored in the skeletal muscles and liver as glycogen. Standard clinical dietary guidelines suggest allocating 45% to 65% of daily calories to carbohydrates to maintain muscle glycogen stores and brain function. If you engage in high-intensity training, your body burns glycogen at a high rate, raising your carb needs considerably.
Formulas Used to Evaluate Carb Goals
The calculator combines standard metabolic formulas to arrive at carbohydrate gram goals:
- Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): Calculated using Mifflin-St Jeor to determine resting calorie expenditure.
- Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE): BMR is scaled by the physical activity multiplier (Sedentary: 1.2, Light: 1.375, Moderate: 1.55, Active: 1.725, Athlete: 1.9).
- Target Calorie Budget: Adjusted for goals (Lose Weight subtracts 500 kcal, Gain Weight adds 300 kcal, Maintain uses baseline TDEE).
- Carb Weight Conversion: Since carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram, the total grams are calculated by multiplying the daily calorie target by the carb percentage allocation, then dividing by 4:
Daily Carbs (grams) = (Calorie Target × Carbohydrate %) / 4
