Understanding Temperature Scales
Temperature is a physical property of matter that quantitatively expresses hot and cold. While there are several temperature scales, the most common are Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Engineering contexts sometimes also employ the Rankine scale.
The Four Main Scales
- Celsius (°C): Used globally for everyday temperature measurements. It is defined by the freezing point of water at 0°C and the boiling point at 100°C under standard atmospheric conditions.
- Fahrenheit (°F): Used primarily in the United States. In this scale, water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F, dividing the interval into exactly 180 degrees.
- Kelvin (K): The thermodynamic temperature scale where 0 K represents absolute zero. The size of one Kelvin unit is exactly the same as one Celsius degree.
- Rankine (°R): An absolute scale like Kelvin, but its degree size is equal to one Fahrenheit degree. This scale starts at absolute zero.
