Common Questions & Insights

How long does it take for alcohol to leave your system?

On average, your body eliminates alcohol at a rate of about 0.015% BAC per hour. Nothing can speed this up—neither coffee, cold showers, nor drinking water can accelerate the liver's metabolic process.

What counts as a standard drink?

In the United States, a standard drink contains about 14 grams (0.6 liquid ounces) of pure alcohol. This is typically one 12-ounce beer (5% ABV), one 5-ounce glass of wine (12% ABV), or one 1.5-ounce shot of distilled spirits (40% ABV).

How does biological sex affect BAC levels?

Women generally have a lower percentage of body water than men of equal weight, meaning the same amount of alcohol will be more concentrated in a female body. Females also produce less of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which breaks down alcohol in the stomach.

Is this BAC Calculator completely accurate?

No. This tool estimates BAC based on the Widmark formula. Actual BAC depends on unique factors like food in your stomach, medications, liver health, muscle-to-fat ratio, and drinking speed. Never use this to determine if it is safe to drive.

What is the legal limit for driving?

In the United States and many other countries, the legal limit for drivers aged 21 or older is a BAC of 0.08%. However, impairment begins well below this limit. We strongly advise finding a designated driver or ride-share if you have consumed any alcohol.
