Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are the various charges involved in stock trading in India?

Trading stocks involves multiple charges: Brokerage (paid to the broker), Securities Transaction Tax (STT, a government tax), Exchange Transaction Charges (paid to BSE/NSE), SEBI Turnover Fees, Stamp Duty, and 18% GST on brokerage + exchange charges. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

Why is the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) so high on Delivery trades?

STT on Equity Delivery is 0.1% on both buying and selling transaction values. This is much higher than Intraday (0.025% on sell only) or F&O because delivery trades represent actual ownership transfers of shares, which the government taxes at higher rates.

What is the break-even price in trading?

The break-even price is the price at which you must sell your purchased shares to cover all trading costs (brokerage, STT, GST, etc.) and make exactly ₹0 net profit. Any selling price above your break-even price represents a net profit.

Are discount brokers always cheaper than full-service brokers?

Generally, yes. Discount brokers like Zerodha, Groww, and Upstox charge flat fees (usually ₹20 per trade or 0.03/0.05%) and offer free equity delivery. Full-service brokers like ICICI Direct charge percentage-based fees (e.g., 0.55% of turnover), which can become extremely expensive on large volumes.

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator estimates the brokerage fee, statutory charges (STT, Stamp Duty, GST, SEBI turnover fees, Exchange charges), and the net profit or loss for stock market trades across Intraday, Delivery, Futures, and Options.

How to Use It

  1. Trade Type: Select Intraday, Delivery, F&O Futures, or F&O Options.
  2. Buy / Sell Price (₹): Enter the price at which you bought and sold the shares.
  3. Quantity: Enter the number of shares traded.
  4. Broker: Select your broker (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One, or ICICI Direct).

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: When you trade stocks, your profit isn't just Sell Price minus Buy Price. You must pay brokerage to the platform, along with several government taxes like Securities Transaction Tax (STT), Exchange Transaction Charges, GST, and SEBI charges. This calculator determines all these friction costs to find your exact net P&L and break-even price.
  • The Formula:
  • Gross P&L = (Sell Price - Buy Price) × Quantity
  • Brokerage = varies by broker and type (e.g., Zerodha Intraday is 0.03% or ₹20, whichever is lower)
  • STT = Delivery: 0.1% on Buy & Sell | Intraday: 0.025% on Sell | Futures: 0.02% on Sell | Options: 0.1% on Sell
  • GST = 18% of (Brokerage + Exchange Charges)
  • Net P&L = Gross P&L - Brokerage - STT - Exchange Charges - SEBI Charges - Stamp Duty - GST
  • Break-even Price = (Total Charges / Quantity) + Buy Price (for long trades)

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

For example, you buy 100 shares of a stock at ₹500 and sell them at ₹520 via Equity Delivery on Zerodha:

  • Buy Value = ₹50,000 | Sell Value = ₹52,000 | Gross Profit = ₹2,000
  • Brokerage = ₹0 (Zerodha Delivery is free)
  • STT = 0.1% on Buy (₹50) + 0.1% on Sell (₹52) = ₹102
  • Exchange Charges = 0.00322% of Total Turnover = ₹3.28
  • GST = 18% of (₹0 + ₹3.28) = ₹0.59
  • SEBI charges = ₹0.10, Stamp Duty = ₹7.50 (0.015% on Buy)
  • Total Charges = ₹0 + ₹102 + ₹3.28 + ₹0.59 + ₹0.10 + ₹7.50 = ₹113.47
  • Net P&L = ₹2,000 - ₹113.47 = ₹1,886.53 profit
