Central Education Interest Subsidy Schemes

To ensure no meritorious student is denied professional education due to financial constraints, the Government of India provides interest subsidy schemes for education loans. Under these schemes, the interest accrued during the study and grace period is paid in full by the government.

1. Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS)

Administered by the Ministry of Education, CSIS is available to General/EWS students pursuing professional or technical education in India. The eligibility limit is an annual parental income of up to ₹4.50 Lakh. Subsidy covers the interest during the moratorium period (course length + 1 year).

2. Dr. Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme

Administered by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, this scheme provides interest subsidy on educational loans for overseas studies (Masters, M.Phil, PhD) to OBC students (income ≤ ₹8.00 Lakh) and EBC students (income ≤ ₹5.00 Lakh). The subsidy is limited to a maximum loan amount of ₹7.50 Lakh.

3. Minority Communities & Padho Pardesh Status

Important Notice: The Padho Pardesh interest subsidy scheme for minority students studying abroad was officially discontinued in the financial year 2022-23. Educational loans for minorities are now supported with low interest rates directly through the National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC), but interest subsidies during the study period are no longer active under Padho Pardesh.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the CSIS interest subsidy eligibility criteria for 2026?

The Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) scheme covers students with an annual parental income of up to ₹4.5 Lakh. It is applicable for professional and technical courses in recognized Indian institutions under the IBA Model Education Loan Scheme. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

What is the Dr. Ambedkar scheme interest subsidy limit?

The Dr. Ambedkar scheme provides interest subsidies on education loans for overseas studies to OBC students (non-creamy layer, family income up to ₹8.00 Lakh) and EBC/DNT students (family income up to ₹5.00 Lakh). The subsidy is capped on a maximum loan amount of ₹7.50 Lakh.

How is the moratorium interest subsidy calculated?

The subsidy covers the simple interest accrued on the education loan during the moratorium period (course duration + 1 year, or 6 months after getting a job, whichever is earlier). Instead of this interest being added (capitalized) to your principal, the Central Government pays it on your behalf.

Which banks participate in the CSIS education loan subsidy?

All public sector banks (like SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda), private sector banks, and cooperative banks that have signed a memorandum with the nodal bank (Canara Bank) participate in this scheme. Claims are uploaded by the bank directly on the Canara Bank CSIS Portal.

  • Dr. Ambedkar Scheme (Abroad): Covers full interest subsidy during the moratorium on overseas studies for OBC students (family income ≤ ₹8.00 Lakhs, non-creamy layer) and EBC students (family income ≤ ₹5.00 Lakhs) pursuing Masters, M.Phil, or PhD.

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

An EWS student takes an education loan of ₹8,0,000 at an 11% p.a. interest rate for a 4-year professional course in India:

  • Annual Family Income: ₹3,0,000 (Eligible for CSIS as it is under the ₹4.5 Lakh limit).
  • Moratorium Period: 4 years course + 1 year grace = 5 years (60 months).
  • Moratorium Interest Saved: Simple interest accumulated during the 5-year moratorium: ₹8,0,000 × 11% × 5 years = ₹4,40,000.
  • Government Subsidy: The Central Government pays ₹4,40,000 in interest on the student's behalf, saving the student from capitalization of interest during their studies.
