Central Education Interest Subsidy Schemes
To ensure no meritorious student is denied professional education due to financial constraints, the Government of India provides interest subsidy schemes for education loans. Under these schemes, the interest accrued during the study and grace period is paid in full by the government.
1. Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS)
Administered by the Ministry of Education, CSIS is available to General/EWS students pursuing professional or technical education in India. The eligibility limit is an annual parental income of up to ₹4.50 Lakh. Subsidy covers the interest during the moratorium period (course length + 1 year).
2. Dr. Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme
Administered by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, this scheme provides interest subsidy on educational loans for overseas studies (Masters, M.Phil, PhD) to OBC students (income ≤ ₹8.00 Lakh) and EBC students (income ≤ ₹5.00 Lakh). The subsidy is limited to a maximum loan amount of ₹7.50 Lakh.
3. Minority Communities & Padho Pardesh Status
Important Notice: The Padho Pardesh interest subsidy scheme for minority students studying abroad was officially discontinued in the financial year 2022-23. Educational loans for minorities are now supported with low interest rates directly through the National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC), but interest subsidies during the study period are no longer active under Padho Pardesh.
