Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When can I withdraw my full EPF corpus?

You can withdraw your entire EPF balance (employee + employer shares + interest) under two conditions: 1. On retirement after reaching the age of 58. 2. If you remain unemployed for more than 2 continuous months. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

What is the tax implication (TDS) on EPF withdrawals?

If you withdraw your EPF after completing 5 continuous years of service, the withdrawal is completely tax-free. If you withdraw before 5 years of service and the amount exceeds ₹50,000, TDS is deducted at 10% (if PAN is provided) or up to 34.6% (if PAN is not provided).

How much can I withdraw from EPF for a medical emergency?

For medical emergencies (self, spouse, children, or parents), you can withdraw up to 6 months of basic wages + DA or your total employee share with interest, whichever is lower. There is no minimum service period required for this advance.

What are the rules for withdrawing PF for marriage or education?

To withdraw for marriage (self, sibling, child) or education (self, child), you must have completed at least 7 years of continuous EPF service. The maximum withdrawal limit is 50% of the employee's contribution with interest. This ensures full compliance with the latest regulations, allowing you to estimate values correctly and avoid common filing errors.

About This Calculator

Target Audience: Salaried taxpayers, investors & retirees planning Indian tax & wealth growth

What Does This Calculator Do?

This calculator computes the maximum withdrawable amount from your Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) for different life events, determines service requirement compliance, and evaluates TDS tax applicability.

How to Use It

  1. Withdrawal Reason: Select the reason for your withdrawal (medical, marriage, education, housing, unemployment, or retirement).
  2. Account Details: Input your age, years of continuous EPF service, current EPF balance, and monthly basic salary.
  3. Calculate: Click to see your eligible withdrawal limit, tax implications, and remaining locked balance.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Rules: EPFO allows partial withdrawals (advances) for specific purposes:
  • Medical: Up to 6 months of basic wages + DA (no service minimum).
  • Home Loan: Up to 90% of total balance (3 years service minimum).
  • Home Purchase/Construction: Up to 24x monthly wages (5 years service minimum).
  • Marriage/Education: Up to 50% of employee contribution (7 years service minimum).
  • Natural Calamity: Up to 3 months basic wages (no service minimum).
  • Taxation (TDS): Withdrawals after 5 years of continuous service are 100% tax-free. For service under 5 years, withdrawals above ₹50,000 attract 10% TDS (with PAN) or up to 34.6% (without PAN).

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

An employee with 4 years of continuous service and a monthly basic salary of ₹25,000 has an EPF balance of ₹3,00,000. They need to withdraw funds for a medical emergency.

  • Eligible Amount: 6 × ₹25,000 = ₹1,50,000 (or the employee's contribution, whichever is lower).
  • Service Requirement: Met (no minimum service for medical treatment).
  • TDS Applicable: Yes (since service is < 5 years and withdrawal is > ₹50,000). 10% TDS = ₹15,000 will be deducted (net payout ₹1,35,000).
