Understanding CGPA Calculations & Scaling Systems

Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a standardized score indicating your total academic output over multiple semesters. Because it accounts for course credits, semesters with larger coursework counts will have a greater influence on your final cumulative standing.

1. The CGPA math

CGPA calculations do not simply average semester GPAs. If one semester has 18 credits and another has 12 credits, the 18-credit term is weighted more heavily. The formula multiplies each term's GPA by its credit value, aggregates these values, and divides by the combined credits:

CGPA = Sum(Semester GPA × Semester Credits) / Total Cumulative Credits

2. Converting CGPA to percentage

Many universities and job application portals require a percentage equivalent instead of a CGPA. While schools can have custom formulas, the standard guidelines are:

  • 10.0 Scale: The CBSE (and many technical universities in India) uses the standard conversion: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.8 equates to 83.6%.
  • 4.0 Scale: Commonly converted directly as a fraction of the maximum scale: Percentage = (GPA / 4.0) × 100. For example, a 3.6 GPA equates to 90.0%.

Common Questions & Insights

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) represents your performance in a single term or semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all semesters to show your overall grade point average across your entire academic program.

How does the CGPA calculator weight different semesters?

Semesters are weighted by credit hours. A semester with 18 credits will influence your CGPA more than a summer term with only 6 credits. The formula is the sum of (GPA × Credits) for all semesters, divided by the total credits.

How do I convert my CGPA to a percentage?

For a 10.0 scale, universities (like CBSE) commonly multiply the CGPA by 9.5 (e.g., 9.0 CGPA × 9.5 = 85.5%). For a 4.0 scale, percentage is often estimated as (GPA / 4.0) × 100, though exact tables can vary by school.

Can I convert a 10.0 CGPA scale to a 4.0 GPA scale?

A common conversion formula is: GPA (4.0 scale) = (CGPA on 10.0 scale) / 2.5. However, this is an approximation; official conversions often require looking up individual letter-grade values.

Why does my credit count matter for cumulative average?

Credits represent course hours. Higher credit semesters contain more classes, meaning they take up a larger share of your overall cumulative academic standing.
