Understanding CGPA Calculations & Scaling Systems
Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a standardized score indicating your total academic output over multiple semesters. Because it accounts for course credits, semesters with larger coursework counts will have a greater influence on your final cumulative standing.
1. The CGPA math
CGPA calculations do not simply average semester GPAs. If one semester has 18 credits and another has 12 credits, the 18-credit term is weighted more heavily. The formula multiplies each term's GPA by its credit value, aggregates these values, and divides by the combined credits:
2. Converting CGPA to percentage
Many universities and job application portals require a percentage equivalent instead of a CGPA. While schools can have custom formulas, the standard guidelines are:
- 10.0 Scale: The CBSE (and many technical universities in India) uses the standard conversion: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.8 equates to 83.6%.
- 4.0 Scale: Commonly converted directly as a fraction of the maximum scale: Percentage = (GPA / 4.0) × 100. For example, a 3.6 GPA equates to 90.0%.
