Understanding Course Grades & Final Exam Thresholds
Managing your course grades is a key element of academic planning. Whether you are aiming to maintain an A or looking to secure a pass in a difficult course, understanding how weighted grading systems work removes the stress of uncertainty.
1. The final exam target math
In most weighted courses, grades are split between coursework (homework, quizzes, exams) and a final exam. If you know your target grade, your current grade, and how much the final exam counts, you can solve for the needed score using this linear equation:
For example, if your current grade is 85%, your target is 90%, and the final exam is worth 25% of your grade (0.25):
- Your coursework makes up 75% of your grade, contributing: 85% × 0.75 = 63.75% overall.
- To reach 90%, your final exam must yield: 90% - 63.75% = 26.25% overall points.
- To get 26.25% overall points from a 25% weighted exam: 26.25% ÷ 0.25 = 105%. You would need extra credit to reach your 90% target in this case.
2. Calculating overall weighted class averages
If you want to determine your current standing across multiple graded parts of a class, you multiply each category score by its weight, sum those products up, and divide by the total weights entered:
This calculation handles classes where weights do not add up to 100% yet (e.g. earlier in the semester), adjusting your grade to show an accurate current course average.
