Understanding Your Typing Speed Result
Speed and accuracy are the core components of keyboard competency. While typing fast is helpful, maintaining a high level of accuracy saves time because you do not have to pause and correct spelling errors.
The Mathematics of Keyboard Metrics
Standard typing metrics use three key variables to assess your performance:
- Gross WPM (Words Per Minute): Represents the total speed at which you tap the keys. It is calculated by dividing your total keystrokes by 5, and then dividing that number by the duration of the test in minutes.
- Mistakes & Penalty: Each uncorrected mistake reduces your accuracy. In some testing software, errors carry a double penalty, but standard Net calculations deduct one mistake per standardized word.
- Net WPM (Actual Speed): The ultimate speed score. It subtracts errors from your gross word count before dividing by the test duration in minutes. If your mistakes exceed your gross words, your Net WPM is graded as 0.
