Understanding Average Statistics
An average provides a single value that represents the center or typical value of a dataset. In statistics, there are multiple ways to define this center, known as measures of central tendency. This tool evaluates the four primary central metrics: mean, median, mode, and range.
Comparing the Statistical Profiles
Mean (Arithmetic)
Calculated by summing all items in the dataset and dividing by the total count. It represents the central balance point but is highly sensitive to extreme outliers.
Median
The middle value when the data is sorted. If the number of items is even, it is the average of the two middle numbers. Excellent for skewed datasets like home sales.
Mode
The value that occurs most frequently. A dataset can have one mode, multiple modes (multimodal), or no mode if all values occur with equal frequency.
Range
The difference between the maximum and minimum values. Measures the total spread of your numbers, illustrating how scattered or compact your dataset is.
