Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between opening and closing ranks in JoSAA?

Opening rank is the highest rank (best) at which a candidate was admitted to a branch. Closing rank is the lowest rank (last) at which admission was granted during that round.

How many counselling rounds are conducted by JoSAA?

JoSAA conducts 5 rounds of seat allocation for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, followed by 2 CSAB special rounds specifically for vacant seats in NITs and IIITs.

What is the home state quota in NIT seat allotments?

NITs reserve 50% of their total seats for candidates belonging to the state where the NIT is located (Home State quota). The other 50% is open to other states (OS quota).

Can I change my choices after locking them in JoSAA portal?

No. Once you submit and lock your choices on the JoSAA portal, they cannot be modified under any circumstances. If unlocked, the system automatically locks the last saved choices.

What is the JoSAA fee payment and document verification process?

Once a seat is allocated, you must upload required documents, select seat options (Freeze, Slide, Float), and pay the seat acceptance fee (typically ₹35,000 for General) online.

The Logic Explained Simply

  • The Concept: Every college branch has a cutoff range. If your rank is below the opening rank, admission is certain. If it falls inside the range, it is likely. If it is just above the closing rank, it is ambitious.
  • The Formula:

Certain: Rank < Opening Rank

Likely: Opening Rank <= Rank <= Closing Rank

Ambitious: Closing Rank < Rank <= Closing Rank + 10% margin

Real-World Calculation Breakdown

If you have a General CRL of 140 and search for IIT CSE branches:

  1. IIT Bombay CSE (closing rank 80): classified as Ambitious.
  2. IIT Delhi CSE (closing rank 150): classified as Likely.
  3. IIT Madras CSE (closing rank 180): classified as Certain.
