👗 The Styling Science behind Body Shape Classification
In the fashion and styling industry, human body types are mathematically categorized based on the relationships between the bust, waist, and hips. Knowing your mathematical shape allows you to pick structured silhouettes that balance proportions and create symmetry.
Mathematical Definitions of Shapes
The calculations use specific equations to categorize standard female shapes:
- Hourglass: Hips and Bust are nearly equal, with a well-defined waist (Bust - Waist ≥ 9 inches, Hip - Waist ≥ 10 inches, and |Bust - Hip| ≤ 1 inch).
- Pear (Triangle): Hip measurement is significantly wider than the bust (Hip - Bust ≥ 3.6 inches, and Hip - Waist ≥ 9 inches).
- Inverted Triangle: Bust and shoulders are wider than the hips (Bust - Hip ≥ 3.6 inches, and Bust - Waist ≥ 9 inches).
- Apple (Oval): Waist is equal to or wider than bust and hips (Waist - Bust ≥ 2 inches or Waist - Hip ≥ 2 inches).
- Spoon: Hips are wider than bust, and waist is moderately defined (Hip - Bust ≥ 2 inches and Hip - Waist ≥ 7 inches).
- Rectangle (Banana): Hips, waist, and bust are relatively balanced without a highly defined waistline.
