Common Questions & Gravel Insights

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

A standard cubic yard of dry gravel weighs about 1.4 to 1.5 tons, which equals 2,800 to 3,000 pounds. Wet gravel or tightly compacted crusher run can weigh up to 1.6 tons per yard.

What is the best gravel depth for a driveway or walkway?

For driveways carrying vehicles, aim for a depth of 4 to 6 inches, preferably laid over a compacted soil subgrade. For simple garden paths, patio bases, or landscaping borders, 2 to 3 inches is plenty.

How many 50-pound bags of gravel make up a cubic yard?

You will need about 54 to 60 bags of 50 lb gravel to fill one cubic yard. If you have a project larger than half a cubic yard, ordering bulk gravel delivered by truck is usually much cheaper.

Why should I add a waste factor for gravel compaction?

Gravel settles and compacts when walked or driven on, reducing its net volume. Adding a 10% to 15% waste and compaction factor ensures you do not run short after rolling the stones.

What is the difference between pea gravel and crusher run?

Pea gravel consists of small, rounded, smooth stones that drain water excellently and look great on pathways. Crusher run is a mix of jagged stone fragments and fine rock dust that packs together into a solid base for paving.
