Common Questions & Tiling Layouts

How much extra tile should I buy for cuts and waste?

For standard straight lay grids, add a 10% waste factor to your order. If you are laying tiles diagonally, in a herringbone pattern, or working in a room with many corners and angles, increase the waste margin to 15%.

Does the grout joint width affect the number of tiles needed?

Yes. Grout lines take up physical space. Large grout joints (like 1/4 inch) slightly increase the area covered by each tile, reducing the total count. Our calculator automatically adds the grout joint width to the tile dimensions for precision.

How do I calculate tiles for an irregular wall or backsplash?

Divide the wall or backsplash into rectangular sections. Calculate the square footage of each section, add them together, and deduct openings like windows, sinks, or stoves. Enter the net square footage into the calculator.

How many tiles are inside a standard box?

Box counts vary widely depending on tile size. Large-format tiles (like 12x24 or 24x24 inches) typically have 6 to 10 tiles per box. Smaller subway tiles (like 3x6 inches) can have 80 to 100 tiles per box.

What grout joint size is recommended for tile projects?

Use a 1/16 inch joint for rectified (perfectly straight-edge) tiles for a seamless look. For standard pressed ceramic tiles, a 1/8 inch or 3/16 inch joint is recommended to hide minor size variances in the tiles.
